Listen to Obituary

Betty Jean (Lewallen) Wingate, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, in St. Paul, Minnesota, just two months shy of her 101st birthday.

Betty was born to William and Winnifred Lewallen on September 25, 1924, in Hannibal, Missouri. She was the youngest of eight children.

Betty married LaVerne (Bud) Wingate in 1948 and they were blessed with three children, Sharon, John, and Brad. Betty was widowed at an early age when Bud died unexpectedly in 1982.

Betty and Bud lived and raised their children in Hannibal and in Quincy, Illinois. She was a homemaker for most of her married life. However, after Bud’s untimely death, Betty ran the family office supply business, Hannibal Office Supply for several years before selling the business. Betty moved with her daughter Sharon to St. Paul, Minnesota in 2014.

Betty was a serene and joyful woman who survived challenges with strength, poise, and good humor. She was quick witted and was an absolute joy to all who knew her. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Betty is survived by her three children, Sharon Wingate, John (Lynae) Wingate, Brad Wingate; granddaughters, Annya Wingate and Amelia (Sean) Brady (daughters of John and Lynae), and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Susan (DeFrank) Wingate.
