Charles A. Setala

Charles A. "Chal" Setala passed away peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, November 22, at the age of 84.

Chal is preceded in death by his life partner, Jan Koerner; his parents, Muriel (née Peterson) and Arnie Setala; and his great-nephew, William. 

Chal cherished Jan deeply and considered her the love of his life. He is also remembered by members of Jan’s family, including Kristi (Russell) Novacek; grandchildren, Ashley Novacek and Eric Novacek; and great-grandchildren, Dakota Novacek and Roman Medrud.

Chal is survived by his brother, Jon (Martha) Setala; sister, Ann Setala; nieces, Andrea (Gabe) Lane and Erin Setala; nephew, Tim (Tuong) Setala; and a large and loving group of great-nieces and great-nephews, Sarri, Rory, Patrick, Elizabeth, Teagen, Emily, Tahlia, Vivienne, Kelly, Tatum, Kai, and Kash.

Chal grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from Murray High School. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and went on to serve as a Scout Master. During high school, he began working at Tom’s Service Station in Roseville, where he spent decades as an expert mechanic before his retirement.

He enjoyed using his remarkable mechanical skills to support auto racing events and continued to love watching racing throughout his life. In his younger years, Chal also loved playing baseball on neighborhood teams.

Chal was a proud and grateful friend of Bill W. for 40 years, and the fellowship he found there was an important and sustaining part of his life.

Memorial visitation 4:00 - 7:00 PM Saturday, January 10 at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home-Roseville, 2130 N. Dale Street at County Road B.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to your local Alcoholics Anonymous chapter in honor of Chal’s 40 years of sobriety.
