David was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania to Walter and Ethel Shores. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Towanda High School in 1958. He earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD in metallurgy and material science from Penn State University, then continued his postdoctoral studies at Ohio State. David worked at GE in Schenectady, NY for twelve years focusing on alloy development, high temperature corrosion experiments, and fuel cell research, resulting in multiple patents. In the fall of 1982 he moved to Minnesota to teach at the University of Minnesota. He taught in the Department of Chemistry and Material Science until December of 2014.
David was a skilled woodworker, and he enjoyed sailing, fishing, and photography. A favorite pastime of his was playing Pinochle with his family.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ethel; brothers, Llewellyn, LaVern, Edward, and Norman Shores; sister, Frances Lewis; and granddaughter, Zoey Tran.
David is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Teresa; son, Geoff Shores; daughters, Kate Grandprey-Shores and Ellen Tran; and grandchildren, Cecelia and Ezra Tran.
David died from complications of Alzheimer’s. He passed peacefully with loved ones at his side. Thank you to the staff at New Perspective in Roseville and to Brighton Hospice for the loving care they provided David these past 15 months.
A memorial service to honor David’s life will be at Galilee Lutheran Church, 145 N. McCarron’s Blvd, Roseville, MN, on Monday May 18th at 11am. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
