Don was born 92 1/2 years ago in St. Paul to Marie and Frank Huberty. He was the third of 10 children. He was a bit of a sickly child and always had issues with his lungs. The doctors informed his parents that he would die before he was 4, but his parents refused to believe that and did everything they could think of to keep him alive.
He worked on farms during the summers to build up his strength. He went to school at St. Agnes grade school and Mechanic Arts high school.
He was drafted into the Army and was on a ship to enter the Korean War when peace was declared. His ship was rerouted to Germany and he spent most of his term of service in Europe. He loved the forests of Germany.
Don married his bride, Mary Jane "Midge" Kegley, in 1959. His mother told Midge after the wedding there were no backsies! They welcomed five children, eleven grandchildren, one little angel, eighteen great grandchildren and resided in their home on West Minnehaha for over 66 years.
Don worked at Curtis 1000 until he received his license to drive semi trucks. He drove truck for Pacific Mutual Door company for over twenty years. He loved driving and up until the day he died claimed he was a “professional”. Some of his children, and now grandchildren would get into a car or truck and claim, “don’t worry, I got this. My Dad (Grandpa), is a truck driver.” He and Midge took many road trips across the U.S., especially to Naples, Florida.
Don was an accomplished bowler. He earned his “Super Bowl” ring by bowling a score of 300 during his league play.
Don worked tirelessly for St. Vincent’s Church, always doing jobs no one else wanted to do. He gave rides to and from the VA for veterans and anyone else who needed one. Whenever someone in the family or neighborhood needed a helping hand, Don was there to lend it. Throughout his life he was the picture of a Good Samaritan.
Don passed away on June 30, 2025 with Midge right beside him.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marie; his sisters, Jackie, Kathleen, and Mary Clare; his brothers, Frank (Butz), Ray, and Bill, and his dear grandson, Nathan.
He is survived by his bride, Mary Jane "Midge"; his children, Kay (Mike) Ritchie, Don (Denise), Steve (Anne), Tim (Connie), Jenny (Robert) Thomasser; his grandchildren, Adam and Blaine Ritchie, Nikki Leland, Donny (Cassie), Tyler (Heather), Danielle (Nate) Anderson, Brent (Tarah), Melissa (Nick) Bienias, Kyle, Heidi (Tom) Fondurulia, and Sydney; his great grandchildren, Zayvier, Destiny, Addison, Mya, Chase, Audrina, Sofia, Elijah, Ellie, MacKenzie, Liam, Carter, Sawyer, Finn, Layla, Ashlen, Aria and Luka; his siblings, Len, Geri Lambach, and Joe; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by all.
