Listen to Obituary

Genevieve Ann Netterlund passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Genevieve was born at home on August 4, 1931, and raised in Karlstad, MN, where she was the youngest child and only daughter of Anders Frederick (Fred) Johnson and Gunhild Frederika Peterson.

She moved to St. Paul, MN in 1950 to attend Mounds Midway School of Nursing. She graduated in 1953 and went home to work in the Karlstad Hospital. With encouragement from the doctor there, she moved to the Twin Cities and worked at the University of Minnesota Hospital.

On September 3, 1955, Genevieve married Rudy Russell Netterlund at the Karlstad Baptist Church. They made their home in the Como area of St. Paul where Mark was born and later bought a house in Northeast Minneapolis, where they welcomed Joy and Susan into their home. The family moved to their new house in Roseville in 1966 where Genevieve lived for nearly 60 years.

Genevieve worked at Midway Hospital when her children were very young, and later at Lake Ridge Health Care Center from 1972 until her retirement from nursing.

Genevieve loved to sew and knit and excelled at home making. She donated much of her handiwork to those in need. She baked bread throughout her life – she was a wonderful cook and baker!

Genevieve and Rudy held a deep Christian faith and were active members of Elim Baptist Church (now Mill City Church) when they lived in Northeast Minneapolis, then later joined Calvary Baptist Church after they had moved to Roseville. She has loved and served the Lord through a long and sometimes difficult life. She read her Bible, cover to cover (many times) and committed to memory whole chapters (and even some entire books). Genevieve underlined numerous verses in her well-worn Bible and marked passages with exclamation marks.

Genevieve and Rudy enjoyed camping together with the family. They also loved to fish in Minnesota’s abundant lakes. For them, camping was a lifelong pursuit.

The last two years of her life, Genevieve joined the community at Amira Choice in Forest Lake where she enjoyed making new friends, both residents and staff. This loving neighborhood welcomed her and helped her rediscover the social joys of living with others. We are especially grateful to the staff of Amira Choice and the hospice team at Ecumen for the compassionate dignified care they provided.

Genevieve is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy; her parents and six brothers.

In her last days, Genevieve continued to rely on God’s care. She noted on a slip of paper a Bible passage that gave her comfort.

Listen to me, you descendant of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.    Isaiah 46: 3-4

A Memorial Service for Genevieve will be announced at a later date.
