James "Jim" Hielsberg, age 77, passed away on July 18, 2026, at his home in Roseville, MN. He was known to many around Alexandria as "Gig". To the Rice Street regulars, he was often referred to as "The Kid". To his family, he was Jim, Jimmy, or Pop.
Jim was born on April 4th, 1949, in Saint Paul, MN. He was the son of Marguerite and Henry O. Hielsberg. To friends and family, he was known for his commitment to help others when needed, his sense of humor and generosity.
He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for many years. He lived a modest life but was always generous with his time and resources. When the opportunity permitted, Jim enjoyed fishing, touring, and spending time with friends and family. He was an avid hockey fan, long suffering Vikings fan, and he loved watching shows about fishing and classic cars. In recent years, he found the most joy in attending his granddaughter's athletic activities and spending time with them.
Jim is survived by his sons, Matthew, Joshua, and Thomas; granddaughters, Anna, Lexi, and Lana; brother, Kurt; and sister, Jan. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John “Scott” Hielsberg.
Jim will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim's life will be remembered at a memorial visitation from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Tuesday, July 28 at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home (Roseville), 2130 N. Dale St.
