Juan Quentin Quitevis, known affectionately to all as "Nito," passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026. He was 89 years old.
A man of dedication, and deep community commitment, Nito leaves behind a legacy defined by his passion for sports, his service to his country and community, and his profound love for his family.
Nito graduated from St. Paul Central High School and was a longtime Shoreview resident, making his home on the shores of Lake Owasso. He was an avid competitor throughout his life, achieving distinction as a runner and a judo black belt. His true passion, however, lay on the water, where he became a state and national water ski champion. His expertise led him to serve as a former judge of the American Water Ski Association and USA Worlds. He dedicated countless hours to promoting safe water use, advocating with the Lake Owasso Association, the City of Shoreview, and the MN Water Ski Association, of which he was a proud member and later inducted into its Hall of Fame.
A proud veteran, Nito served his country during the Korean War aboard the USS Philippine Sea and remained an avid supporter of the US military throughout his life. His dedication to public service extended to his community in Shoreview, where he served as a council member for the Shoreview City Council from 1992-1996 under Mayor Jim Chalmers.
Professionally, Nito spent many years as a dedicated truck driver and also taught defensive driving for AAA. His love for the MN State Fair was well-known among vendors, as he took time off each year to deliver ice for the event. Nito was also an active member of the Filipino American society, proudly celebrating his Filipino heritage.
Nito was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John Q. Quitevis and Cecile E. (Chapman) Quitevis; his cherished daughter, Maile Calder; and his grandsons, Eric Quitevis and Blake Fredrickson.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Coral (Mark) Wilkens, and Liana (Brian) Land; his son-in-law, Brad Calder (the spouse of his late daughter, Maile); and his sisters, Lucena (Jim) Slaten, and Carmen (Dave) Williams.
Nito was a devoted grandfather to Mark Wilkens, Kevin Wilkens, Brittany Suits, Kayla Badger, Kelby Land, Karisa Land, Bradley Calder, Brian Calder, and Oceana Smith. He was also great-grandfather to 17 great-grandchildren.
A cornerstone of Nito's personality was his incredible warmth and hospitality; he truly never knew a stranger. Friends and family were always welcome at his home, where Nito loved to cook and host guests who would come for a barbecue and a perfect day the lake.
Nito’s memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched through his service and competitive spirit.
