Leonard “Butch” Earl Schimek passed away at home on May 19th due to an acute myocardial infarction. Butch was born on May 5, 1948 to Ludwig and Marcella (Sieberg) Schimek in Mankato, MN. He graduated from Mankato West High School and then enlisted in the Navy where he served for 2 years as a grade E3 FN. He and his first wife, Gail Kirkman, had a son Erik. Later in life he married Merrilee McMahon with whom he later divorced.
Butch had a varied work career, he was mechanically inclined and enjoyed many passions. He also enjoyed gardening and canning. He cherished his step-grandchildren and the time spent getting together with his siblings.
Butch is survived by his son, Erik Schimek; his sisters, Catherine Reynolds and Dianne Schimek; his brothers, Wayne (Jolene) Schimek, Ronald Schimek, and David Schimek; his two step-sons, Trevor (Jolene) McMahon and Jason (Cassandra) McMahon; and grandchildren Hunter, Alyssa, Owen and Cooper McMahon and William McMahon; as well as several nieces, nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Welsh and Joan Jirik; brothers-in-law, Richard Reynolds, William Jirik, and Terry Welsh; and long-time friend of his sister Dianne, Ronald West.
A committal service will be held Monday, September 8 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Ave S., Mpls at 12:30 PM (Meet at Assembly Area #3 by 12:15 PM).
