Age 91, of White Bear Lake, passed away on March 27, 2025.
Roland was born and raised in St. Paul. He attended Minnehaha Academy and the University of Minnesota. He was an orthopedic surgeon in St. Paul for 30 years. Prior to starting private practice, he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam war to serve as a surgeon on Okinawa, a duty he felt honored to serve to help those injured during the war. Over the years Roland used his skills as an orthopedic surgeon to go on several medical mission trips to Africa. He was a man of faith in Christ. Roland was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Fridley. He was a witness for Jesus in his personal and professional life.
After retiring, Roland spent his time painting, hunting, and caring for his beloved dogs.
He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Preceded in death by his loving wife, Joan; and twin brother, Richard Birkebak.
Survived by children, Susan (Eric) Donaldson, David Birkebak, Neil (Premi) Birkebak and Sharon (Joel) Bearden. Also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Rachel, Jack, Josh, Vishal and Rohan.
Private family service and interment.
